One of the biggest benefits of being the editor of From House To Home, I’ve found, is all the wonderful tips and tricks I’ve learned over the years. It’s always rewarding to pass all these great ideas on to you, and it’s fun to use them in my own life, too--and I really do.
Take, for example, my daughter, who recently moved into her first apartment. She was struggling with what colors to paint her living room. Even though she had a handful of paint swatches that she loved, she just couldn’t visualize how to put them together. In her frustration, she was rapidly losing sight of the adventure and fun in the project.
“C’mon,” I said, and whisked her to the nearest Pier 1--one of her favorite stores. Once inside, I asked her to find an object with a color she loved. It took some time, but she discovered a throw pillow with touches of a blue that she adores. Catching on quickly to what I was up to then, she found the next color on, of all things, a box containing a set of cheese slicers. But the box was just the right shade of gray she’d always pictured putting with that blue on the pillow.
We bought the two items and took them to the nearest paint store where they were more than happy to match the paint colors to those on the pillow and the box. I loved sharing this decorating technique with my daughter. Through it, she discovered a bit of magic--a fun way to find her true colors.
And now my daughter’s living room walls are beautifully painted with her own very uniquely matched hues--no one else has walls colored “Blue Asian Pillow” or “Cheese Set”!
