How To Improve Your Guest Bedroom So It Feels Like A 5-Star Hotel

These guest room updates will make your out-of-town visitors feel pampered and special. You’ll be surprised at how easy it is to improve your guest bedroom so it feels like a 5-star hotel.

Are you expecting out-of-town visitors?

For many of us, that’s a whole new level of stress.

Is it even possible to make the room that gets used as extra storage for 50 weeks out of the year (or is that just my guest room?) into sleeping quarters that our guests will love?

Yes! And it’s easier to do than you might think.

I like to get some inspiration from 5-star hotels. While they may look nice, it’s really the amenities they provide that make their rooms feel so special.

Which is why it’s not as hard as you might think to duplicate the same feeling in your own home.

Try these easy ways to improve your guest bedroom so it feels like a 5-star hotel.

1 | Use the biggest, most comfortable bed possible

Of course, the main reason for a guest bedroom is to sleep. So making sure that the bed is comfortable is a must.

Most people find a bed that has lots of room to spread out in more comfortable than smaller ones.

And everyone will sleep better on a high quality mattress rather than the 20-year old hand-me-down.

I sleep in my guest room once in a while just to make sure the mattress is still good.

2 | Supply lots of pillows

Different people like different numbers and types of pillows to sleep on.

Offering a choice of feather (or down) pillows and synthetic pillows allows guests to choose the kind they like.

And providing at least two pillows per person means they can double-up if they want to.

Or prop themselves up to read in bed.

3 | Use layers of bedding

Different people also like different sleeping temperatures.

By providing sheets, a duvet, and a blanket, your visitors can choose how many layers they want to sleep with.

While not absolutely necessary, using a down duvet will give that extra feeling of luxury that you get in a high-end hotel.

4 | Provide storage for decorative pillows

If you have decorative pillows on the bed, make sure there’s a good place to put them when the bed is being used.

I have a little bench under the window that is the perfect size for storing pillows when they are not on the bed.

And don’t use so many that guests have to spend 5 minutes clearing the bed before they can get in.

5 | Add a down mattress pad

Adding a down or feather mattress pad under the sheets creates some extra softness.

It creates that sink into the bed feeling that always feels luxurious.

This is especially useful if your mattress is a little too firm.

6 | Have easy-to-access lights

Have a light that turns on with a switch at the door.

Most guests don’t know your home (or their temporary bedroom) as well as you do.

If they are coming in after dark, it’s much easier for them to navigate the room if they can just turn on the switch at the door.

Similarly, having a light that turns on with a switch by the bed makes it easier for guests to get up in the middle of the night. Or read a little before bed.

I don’t have a lot of room beside my guest room bed so I installed swing arm lamps on the sides of the bookcases.

7 | Provide an alarm clock

Another easy way to improve your guest bedroom is to add an alarm clock beside the bed.

And make sure it has been set to the correct time.

This is especially useful if your guests are in a different time zone, and may need a reminder of the local time.

8 | Hang a large mirror

A large wall mirror allows people to view what they are wearing from head to toe before they leave the room.

Since there is usually at least one dress-up occasion over the holidays, this will let them make sure they look their best.

If you don’t have room on a wall for one, the back of the door is a great location for a mirror. Or you can install mirror closet doors (like I did in my guest room).

9 | Clear space for clothes

Empty a couple of drawers and clear space in the closet so there is room for your guests to put away some clothes.

Let your visitors know what storage areas are available for them to use so they don’t feel like they are going through your stuff.

10 | Provide suitcase storage

Have a flat surface available (like a table or bench) that is big enough to hold a suitcase.

That way your out-of-towners can get their luggage off the floor and have easy access to anything they didn’t put away.

11 | Give out your wifi password

Everyone staying at your home will want to know your wifi password.

Some people have their wireless password hanging like a picture in the guest room.

I give out little “guest” cards that include things like my phone number, address, wireless network and password. That way they have all of my information handy in case they need it.

Any way you do it, providing the wireless password is a courtesy everyone appreciates, especially if they don’t have to ask.

12 | Control the light

Make sure that guests can control the amount of light that comes into the room (and prevent outsiders from looking in) by hanging drapes and/or blinds. (I have both).

Different people are used to sleeping in different conditions.

Try to make sure they can get a good sleep by allowing them to control how much (or how little) light can get into the room.

13 | Put out a coffee maker

These last few items on our guest bedroom improvement list are things that most people don’t really expect when they’re staying at someone else’s house.

And you certainly don’t have to do any of them to have your visitors be comfortable in your home. But they will help to make your guests feel pampered and special.

Having a coffee maker available in the room along with all the necessary coffee-making supplies is definitely a guest room upgrade.

Provide different types of coffee and tea, cups, spoons, creamer, sugar and sweeteners on a tray.

If the bathroom isn’t close by, putting out a couple of bottles of water allow people to make their beverage of choice without having to leave the room.

14 | Provide some entertainment

Sometimes guests need a little time to themselves.

And being able to read or watch TV in bed is something a lot of people don’t get to do at home.

So having the option at your house will really make them feel like they are on vacation.

15 | Supply bathrobes

Hanging fluffy bathrobes in the closet will definitely make your guestroom feel like a high end hotel.

And there is nothing more cozy than being able to snuggle up in a big bathrobe.

Your guests might be so comfortable, they won’t want to leave!
