My original bedroom décor was definitely eclectic and dramatic. Although it was fun to look at, it was not cozy. I needed to change it into something more serene and calming without spending a lot of money.

The Bedroom Before

Here’s the eclectic room I started with. It didn’t look “bad” but just wasn’t serene enough for my bedroom.

Something about it always bothered me because it did not evoke the feeling of calmness I needed. When I looked at the bedroom with a critical eye, I realized that I could easily achieve this with minimal expense and just a few tweaks. I identified those things in the room that I no longer liked, and left the things I liked.

One of the “keepers” was the ceiling. Want to see how it was done? Click here to see our post on how to wallpaper the ceiling.

With a few simple changes, I was able to create the restful room that I was looking for.

Replace the Wallpaper

The wall paper accent wall was too bold (below). Replacing it with a more muted pattern (from HGTV wallpaper book 2) had an immediate positive impact.

Replace the Artwork

The paintings (below) were a great reminder of a Hawaiian vacation, but a little too loud for the bedroom. I swapped them out for one large quieter print that I already owned.

Replace the Area Rug

I also replaced the monochromatic burgundy rug with a gray floral that has complimenting hues, and that I like much better. It used to be in my den.

Update the Lamp Shade

The boa covered lamp shade (below) felt passé. I collaborated with John Shimp at Lampshades Etc. to have a custom smocked shade made in lavender silk. This was a bit costly but I really think it enhances the existing crystal bedside lamp.

Change the Candle Color

I changed the candles from beige (below) to aqua (above) to tie in with the wall color.

Replace the Pillows

The toile pillows were too much use of the same pattern (below). I replaced them with some silk cushions (above) that complimented the duvet stripes and the lamp shade. Since I already owned them, they did not cost me anything.

Now the bedroom looks completely different and pleasantly relaxing.

Best of all, the only expenses were wallpaper, a lamp shade, and candles.

And so did the other end of the room.

With a few changes, I was able to create a serene room that did not cost a lot of money!
