Lilacs are a flowering shrub with purple, pink, blue or white flowers that have the most amazing perfume.

They are available in a range of sizes and grow best in cooler growing zones. (I haven’t been able to get them to survive in my South Carolina garden, but they did very well in Toronto).

Their beautiful fragrant flowers grow on old wood so if you are going to prune them, do it right after they have finished blooming. Otherwise you are probably cutting off next year’s blooms.

Another benefit of lilacs is that they are a favorite plant of hummingbirds and butterflies.
