15 easy ways to make your guest bedroom feel like a hotel

With the holidays fast approaching and out-of-town family ready to descend, our guest bedrooms are about to be put to the test.

For many of us, that’s a whole new level of stress. Is it even possible to make the room that gets used as extra storage for 50 weeks out of the year (or is that just my guest room?) into sleeping quarters that our guests will love?

Yes! And it’s easier to do than you might think.

I like to get some inspiration from 5-star hotels. While they may look nice, it’s really the amenities they provide that make their rooms feel so special.

Which is why it’s not as hard as you might think to duplicate the same feeling in your own home.

Try these easy ways to make your guest bedroom feel like a 5-star hotel. (And to help you remember, get the Guest Bedroom Update Checklist from our resource library).

Of course, the main reason for a guest bedroom is to sleep. So making sure that the bed is comfortable is a must.

Why? A good night’s sleep is the most important amenity you can have in a bedroom.

1 | Offer a choice of feather or down and synthetic pillows so guests can choose the kind they like. And make sure to provide extras so they can prop themselves up to read in bed.

2 | Use layers of bedding. Different people like different sleeping temperatures. By providing sheets, a duvet, and a blanket, your visitors can choose how many layers they want to sleep with. Using a down duvet will give that extra feeling of luxury that you get in a high-end hotel.

3 | If you have decorative pillows on the bed, make sure there’s a good place to put them when the bed is being used. And don’t use so many that guests have to spend 5 minutes clearing the bed before they can get in.

4 | Add a down or feather mattress pad under the sheets to create some extra softness. It creates that sink into the bed feeling that always feels luxurious. This is especially useful if your mattress is a little too firm.

The Necessities

These necessities are the bedroom supplies that make staying in your guest room feel more like home, so your out-of-town family and friends will be more comfortable.

5 | Add an alarm clock beside the bed and make sure it has been set to the correct time. This is especially useful if your guests are in a different time zone, and may need a reminder of the local time.

6 | Hang a large mirror that allows people to view what they are wearing from head to toe. Since there is usually at least one dress-up occasion over the holidays, this will let them make sure they look their best. If you don’t have room on a wall for one, the back of the door is a great location for a mirror.

7 | Empty a couple of drawers and clear space in the closet so there is room to put away some clothes. Let your visitors know what storage areas are available for them to use so they don’t feel like they are going through your stuff.

8 | Have a flat surface available (like a table or bench) that is big enough to hold a suitcase. That way your out-of-towners can get their luggage off the floor and have easy access to anything they didn’t put away.

9 | Provide lamps beside the bed that are good for reading, and can be turned on and off easily without getting up. Since they likely don’t know their way around your room that well, guests will appreciate being able to turn on the light easily if they have to get up in the middle of the night.

10 | Write out a card with your wifi password so they can connect without asking.

The Amenities

These last few items on our guest bedroom update list are things that most people don’t really expect when staying at someone else’s house. And you certainly don’t have to do any of them to have your visitors be comfortable in your home. But they will help to make your guests feel pampered and special.

11 | Bring in a tray with a pitcher of water, an ice bucket full of ice, lemon slices, and some nice glasses. It’s always nice to have a cold glass of water that you don’t have to go to the kitchen to get.

A coffee maker and cup of coffee

12 | Have a coffee maker available in the room along with all the necessary coffee-making supplies. Provide different types of coffee and tea, cups, spoons, creamer, sugar and sweeteners. If the bathroom isn’t close by, a couple of bottles of water allow people to make their beverage of choice without having to leave the room.

13 | Put out a selection of recent magazines or recent books. Having the time to read in bed is a luxury many people to get at home.

14 | Hang fluffy bathrobes in the closet. There is nothing more comfy than being able to snuggle up in a big bathrobe.

A guest bedroom that looks like a hotel room

15 | Provide a TV and remote. Similar to reading in bed, being able to watch TV in bed is another thing a lot of people don’t do at home. So having the option at your house will really make them feel like they are on vacation.

Your guests might be so comfortable, they won’t want to leave!
