One Room Challenge Week 2 - Home Office Mood Board (and the first set back) | This is week 2 of our home office makeover for the One Room Challenge. Check out the progress we made, the set back we had, and the home office mood board.
One Room Challenge Week 2 – Home Office Mood Board (and the first set back)

Welcome to week 2 of the One Room Challenge.  My office officially looks worse now than it did when I started…which is usually the case at this point in the makeover, but always makes it seem like I will never get it finished!

If you missed Week 1 and want to see the “Before” pictures, you can click here.

The plan for this week was to create a home office mood board, figure out what stays and what goes, and finish painting the walls.

This week I went through all of the images I had pinned to my Pinterest inspiration board, deleted a bunch of them and used the rest to create my home office mood board.

As a reminder, this was the floor plan I came up with last week…so far no changes to this part of the design!

What’s Staying and Going

I also made some decisions on what furniture is staying and going, what I need to buy and what I am going to DIY:

  • The desk is going to be replaced by a DIY version that looks something like the one above…the current desk will make an awesome work surface in the garage…
  • I decided to keep some of the storage pieces that go with the current desk (like the computer station and filing cabinets)…but will be getting a major face lift (another DIY project!)
  • I’ll be combining pre-made bottom cabinets with DIY upper shelves for the storage and bench around the window.
  • Since I’m painting over my “fake” architectural interest (the trellis wall), I’ll be adding some real architectural interest (panel moldings) to the walls
  • And because I like to include ceilings in my decor, I’ll be doing something to the ceiling for some extra pizzazz…exactly what is a secret (gotta leave something to your imagination 🙂 )
  • Finally I have ordered the desk chair, cow hide rug, the lamp, ceiling light fixtures and that awesome antique Bergere accent chair…all on their way.  I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the rug and the antique chair will arrive in time for the final reveal…
The pile of stuff waiting to get put away in the new office | One Room Challenge Week 2 - Home Office Mood Board (and the first set back)
The pile of stuff waiting to get put away in the new office

I started moving out the stuff that I’m not going to be using, and piling the stuff that is staying at the end of the room that is already painted…I didn’t want to lug all that stuff downstairs only to bring it all back up in a couple of weeks (I may come to regret that decision.)  What a mess!

Painting

Which leads me to the project that I thought would be the easiest one to complete on time…painting the rest of the office pink.  I already had the spackling, the primer, the paint and all of the painting supplies.  I figured once the furniture was moved away from the walls, I should be able to get the painting done in no time…so I didn’t start it until Monday night…

Trellis wall after being painted with primer

I opened the spackling to fill some nail holes in the walls and it had completely dried out.  Then I opened the primer and it had seen better days…so off I went to the hardware store to buy some more.  I was able to fill the holes and prime the trellis wall (good thing I did…I think it will still take 3 coats of pink to completely cover!)

Next I opened the can of Farrow and Ball Middleton Pink paint…it had completely separated and had lumps in it.  Since the paint isn’t that old, I didn’t think it could possibly have gone bad.  After researching online, I found out that paint can do this if it has been sitting for a while, or if it has frozen.  If it’s caused by freezing, the paint is garbage…if it isn’t, you can revive it by re-mixing it.  Since the closest store that sells Farrow and Ball paint is in Atlanta (2 hours away), I was really hoping that re-mixing would do the trick!

It’s really hard to mix paint properly by hand, so I needed to get a paint mixer attachment for my drill.  Of course, by the time I figured this out, the store was closed…painting would have to wait until the next day.  When I finally did get the paint mixer, it was a miracle worker!  I should have bought one of these things a long time ago…so much easier than trying to stir by hand!

Then, of course, I didn’t quite have enough paint to get the final coat done…so the pictures of the office completely painted pink will have to wait until after it gets delivered.

And of course, I always have at least one “assistant” getting in the way.  Note to self:  White cats and pink paint do not mix!

Next up?  The ceiling decor!  You can bet I’ll be making sure that I have enough paint on hand to get this job finished 🙂

  1. Ha ha, it is so funny to see all that stuff you ordered came in and piled up in one place. I hear you – it makes it feels like you are kind of getting somewhere but not really. At least they are ordered. And of course, you had to run out of paint – makes the process even longer. Hope the painting gets done soon!! Wondering what that secret ceiling thing is about:)

    1. Thanks, Zan! I wish I could say that everything that’s going back into the room is neatly organized…but that is so not the case! Fortunately, Farrow and Ball shipped the paint quickly, so I’m back on track with the painting 🙂 I’m looking forward to getting the room back together!

  2. Your plan is fabulous and I can’t wait to see your progress as it unfolds.
