One Room Challenge Week 2: Master Bathroom Design

If you need some inspiration for a black and white bathroom, this elegant master bathroom design (with sources) may be just what you’re looking for.

It’s week 2 of the One Room Challenge, and my master bathroom is still in a state of disrepair!  If you missed week 1 of the makeover, you can find it HERE.

All of the demo and legwork always seems to take longer than I think it should.

However, I did get a lot of the design done, so at least I now have a pretty good idea of what direction I’m going in.

Black and white bathroom by Jamie Herzlinger

First…my inspiration.

I’m planning on keeping the marble on the walls and fell in love with this bathroom from designer Jamie Herzlinger. I adore the large scale floor tiles with the black cross pattern and the industrial (but still glam) vanity.

The bathroom in the Siam Hotel, Thailand

In this bathroom from the Siam Hotel in Thailand, I love the black trim with the white tiles…not to mention the awesome vanity design.

Black, white and pink bathroom by In Detail Interiors

The pops of color are what drew me to this black and white bathroom by In Detail Interiors. While I won’t be using the same color (I’m thinking purple instead of pink), I do like the way it adds a little pizzazz to the room.

The Design

As you probably already knew from my inspiration pictures, I’m going with black and white as the main color scheme.

Based on the colors in my bedroom, purple will likely be the accent color.  (I promise…I will write a post about the updated version of my bedroom!)

What’s Staying?

Some of the elements of the original bathroom are staying:

The chandelier over the tub is still one of my favorites. Find it HERE.*

And I like the sparkle provided by the pendants on either side of the vanity. Find it HERE.*

I also love the marble tile wainscot. You can find these tiles HERE*. I bought 12″ square tiles and cut them in half to install them subway style.

I like my existing medicine cabinets (which you can find HERE*), but I will be trying to recess them into the wall so they don’t stick out so far.

What’s New?

I was jumping for joy when I found these 24″ floor tiles…exactly the look I’m going for…and very reasonable!  Find them HERE.*

This black vanity with a marble top has the vibe I am going for. Find it HERE.*

I have been wanting a standalone tub forever! And I’m finally getting it…although it was quite a challenge finding one that would fit in the alcove where the old tub was. You can it HERE*.

While I decided not to go through the work of replacing the shower stall, I did decide to replace the shower door with a bi-fold, frameless version. You can find it HERE*.

This black and white fashion drawing by Mona Shafer Edwards is a perfect fit for the Hollywood glam feeling of the bathroom. You can find it HERE.*

The Final Question

Which brings me to the last major design question…what to do with the walls above the marble?

[columns] [span6]

[/span6][span6]

I originally thought I would leave them the current color (Sherwin Williams ‘Essential Gray’)

But then I was thinking I might want to add a subtle pattern, like this muted zebra print wallpaper.

[/span6][span6]

Or maybe something more graphic like this white and black wallpaper?

Or I could really go over the top (in budget and style) with this Zebra wallpaper from Scalamandre.

Your turn to weigh in…which wall option do you like the best?

That’s it for this week…back to doing demo!  And hopefully next week I’ll have some pictures to share 🙂
