black, white and grey bathroom ideas

I recently gave my main bathroom an elegant and glamorous update with a black, white, and grey bathroom makeover.

And it’s one of my favorite renovations, ever!

This classic color combination is timeless, versatile and adds a bit of drama.

The striking contrast of black and white makes a bold statement, while the grey tones bring a sense of calm.

It doesn’t go out of style.

And you can add your own flair with bright towels or decor. Which means you can easily refresh the space without a complete redo.

It also goes well with pretty much any design style (including my glam Art Deco-inspired decor).

So here are all of the black, white and grey bathroom ideas I used to complete this remodel.

You can find all of the sources at the bottom of the page.

Swapping out the old flooring for 24″ square black and white floor tiles was my first design choice.

It instantly amps up the chic factor in the master bathroom and really makes the space pop.

See our black and white bathroom floor tile ideas for more inspiration.

For the walls, I decided to put up 6-inch by 12-inch marble subway tiles.

They go from floor to ceiling around the tub, and half-way up the wall in the rest of the bathroom to create a sophisticated wainscot.

To create a luxurious and seamless look, I also used marble for the baseboards, door trim and chair rail.

The contrasting shades of black, white, and grey add depth and interest.

And the stone definitely adds the elegant look I was going for.

2 | Add a freestanding tub

a freestanding tub in a grey, black and white bathroom

In my bathroom, there wasn’t any room to expand the space where the tub is (it’s actually an alcove under the stairs).

So I had to find something that was less than 58 inches wide.

And this modern freestanding tub was the perfect solution.

It’s a sleek focal point that screams sophistication.

To amp up the indulgence factor, I installed a heated towel rack right behind it.

This way, after a relaxing soak (or shower), you can wrap yourself in the warmth of a toasty towel, just like in a luxury hotel.

Since the tub doesn’t have a deck for things like soap and shampoo, I also built a ledge against the wall out of marble tile.

3 | Paint the walls, ceiling and trim

Painting the walls and ceiling a light grey adds some softness to the room.

And using black paint for the trim and doors adds contrast that provides some drama.

I really wanted to hang Scalamandre zebra wallpaper in this space, but it was too expensive for my budget.

So I brushed silver glaze on the walls. And used a DIY stencil to add whimsical black and white zebras that pay homage to the iconic design.

It definitely adds a touch of glamour.

If you want to recreate it, read our zebra wall tutorial (where you can also download the stencil pattern).

4 | Paint the shower tiles

To give the shower area a fresh look without the hassle of removing tiles, I decided to paint them.

I used the same silver paint as the walls to create a seamless and elegant appearance.

Since they are around the outside of the shower surround, they don’t get too wet.

So I didn’t worry about sealing them. (And 7 years later, they are still going strong).

5 | Use a black vanity with a white countertop

A sleek black vanity with a white marble countertop became the centerpiece of the bathroom.

It features undermount sinks, which means the sinks are installed underneath the countertop for a clean look, and shiny silver faucets that catch the eye.

Above each sink, mirror medicine cabinets offer a smart space to stash toiletries out of sight.

To keep towels tidy and within reach, wicker baskets tuck neatly under the vanity, making storage both practical and stylish.

6 | Make a glam bathroom shelf

A small DIY bathroom shelves with towels

Beside the vanity, I put up this DIY bathroom wall shelf that offers a stylish and practical storage solution for small bathroom spaces.

Crafted from aluminum flashing and embellished with crystal upholstery tacks, it provides a waterproof and glamorous touch to the bathroom decor.

It is perfect for holding toiletries beside the sink and adds a custom, luxurious look without a hefty price tag.

7 | Add a makeup table

Under the window, I added a console table and bench to create the perfect spot for doing makeup or styling hair.

I think this bench might be the most multi-functional piece of furniture I own.

Besides being a good spot to sit, it also has storage which I use as a discreet laundry hamper.

And it’s a good place to rest a tray with spa accessories if I really want to pamper myself.

A freestanding mirror in front of a window

Since the table is right in front of the window, I placed a free-standing mirror on it.

It reflects the light and adds a bit of glam to the room.

8 | Hang black and white shades

I hung up a cordless, black and white roman shade over the window.

It’s design echoes the pattern on the floor.

And folds automatically when you put it up.

Which makes it so easy to use.

9 | Install crystal light fixtures

Crystal pendants on either side of the vanity and a chandelier over the tub add some extra sparkle to the bathroom at night.

I love the way the light reflects off the marble tile and silver wall paint.

10 | Hang black and white pictures

To give my master bathroom a touch of glam with a vintage twist, I chose to hang black and white fashion sketches on the walls.

The sketches themselves are stylish and bring a classic elegance to the space.

And black frames really draw attention to these chic pictures.

The dark borders of the frames contrast beautifully against the lighter walls, making the sketches pop and become a focal point in the room.

This simple addition added a sophisticated flair that ties the whole look together.

11 | Add flowers and other accessories

To finish off the glamorous black, white, and grey master bathroom makeover, I brought in some accessories.

I chose flowers, candles and colored towels because they add bright spots of color that really stand out against the monochrome tones.

a ceramic cat that hides the toilet brush

Last but not least, there’s a ceramic cat that cleverly conceals the toilet brush, blending functionality with a dash of personality.

These little details make the space feel more inviting and personal.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add color to my black white and grey bathroom without ruining the theme?

Absolutely! Adding pops of color through items like towels, bath mats, or even a vase of flowers can enhance the space without taking away from the glam black white and grey theme.

What kind of lighting works best in a black white and grey bathroom?

Opt for lighting that casts a warm glow to soften the contrast of the black and white. Consider installing dimmer switches for adjustable ambiance, and use task lighting around the vanity for functionality.

Is a black white and grey bathroom suitable for small spaces?

Yes, a black white and grey color scheme can work wonderfully in small bathrooms. Use more white and grey to open up the space, with black accents to add depth and interest. Mirrors can also help to make the space feel larger and more glamorous.

    1. Thanks, Lesli! The zebras actually turned out better than I thought they would…and I am really happy to have my bathroom back in working order 🙂

  1. My favorite thing about your room is it doesn’t look like everyone else’s! it is so refreshing to see someone with the confidence to do what they want and not follow the boring farmhouse herd. Bravo! I would feel like a superstar in this lovely room.

    1. Thanks, Rach! I firmly believe that when you’re decorating your own house, you need to do what you love…regardless of what everyone else is doing. And I’m not a farmhouse girl 🙂 So I hope I can inspire others to do what they love, too 🙂

  2. I LOVE that you made your own zebra stencils. I feel the same way about wallpaper (will I like it forever?) and would totally stencil instead – the bathroom looks great 🙂

    1. Thanks, Nicole! And by using the stencil instead of the wallpaper, I could get rid of the arrows…having images of hunting in my bathroom just didn’t seem very relaxing 🙂

  3. Absolutely gorgeous! I always love your style and taste, Wanda! You’re fear fearless when it comes to tackling something that you may not have done before. I thought when you redid this BR it was super but now it is over the top! Luxurious, elegant and beautiful! Bravo!

    1. Thanks, Janie! When I was in the middle of the tile removing mess, I was beginning to question if I made the right decision, but I’m definitely happy with it now that it’s finished 🙂

  4. This is stunning! I had to see how that floor tile worked out, it’s pretty classy looking… But I am in awe of your stenciling job! How did you make it!? You did an amazing job on the whole room!

    1. Thanks, Eliesa! The stencil was kind of a last-minute addition 🙂 To create it, I got a zebra image from Adobe Stock, and then edited it in Photoshop to create 2 separate stencil images – one for the background white and the second one for the black stripes. Then used my die-cutting machine to cut out the images from a plastic sheet to create the stencils. It was a fun project! I’m planning on doing a post on it once I recover from this makeover :).

  5. Wanda, the bathroom makeover is truly spectacular! I’m so impressed with all of the tiling that you did yourself. The floor tiles are timelessly elegant and the zebra stenciled walls are so pretty.

    1. Thanks, Cyndi! All the tiling and stenciling was a lot of work, but I think it was worth it in the end 🙂

  6. Marty Oravetz says:

Wow, what a stunning makeover. I love it all. The floor is amazing and I adore the zebras on the wall too. Gorgeous.

    1. Thanks, Marty! I was really happy when I found those floor tiles…they really make the room. The zebras just add a little fun 🙂

  7. Holy cow, Wanda, I don’t even know what to say! It’s doesn’t even look like the same bathroom. I can’t believe you made that zebra stencil. You should be so proud of yourself, honestly, it’s stunning! I am so exited for you. Hugs, CoCo

    1. Thanks, Coco! I think the zebras are my favorite part! After all that work, I’m planning on putting the new tub to work 🙂

  8. Amazing, amazing, amazing! What a great job. Love everything. Where did you get the table and the stand up mirror. They would be great in my bathroom. Can’t say enough good things.

    1. Thanks, Aunt Elaine! I’m happy with the way it turned out 🙂 The table came from overstock.com. I got the mirror from amazon.com, but it looks like they don’t have this style in Canada. If you do a search for ‘tri-fold vanity mirror’, there’s a couple of other options that could work.

  9. I only see one flaw with your new bathroom, and it’s a biggee! — It’s in YOUR house and not mine! 😉 Love it! AND, I like your stencil better than the original wall paper. Thanks for sharing the trip. It was, well, a trip 😉 And you have given me ideas for my bathroom.

    1. Thanks, Lenora! I actually like the way the stencil turned out, too…and it was a lot less expensive than the wallpaper 🙂 Thanks for stopping by, and good luck with your bathroom!

    1. Thanks, Cassie! I like to have a little fun when I’m decorating 🙂

  10. I can’t believe you created that zebra stencil. I totally thought it was wallpaper! Your room is gorgeous, and I love the table and vanity. Beautiful job!

    1. Thanks, Julie! The stencil was a bit of a pain to do, but I thought it turned out pretty well 🙂

  11. What an elegant room! Love the tile and the zebra wallpaper is so fun! One room down. LOL. Thanks for stopping by! Toodles, Kathryn @TheDedicatedHouse
