Why I love this honey mustard chicken breasts recipe

This boneless skinless chicken breasts recipe is made with Dijon mustard, honey and some spices.

Then baked in the oven for a fast and easy dish that’s ready in about 30 minutes.

Not only is it easy to make, but everyone loves it!

Which is why it’s one of my go-to dinner dishes for both regular weeknight meals and dinner parties.

Ingredients

This recipe will make 4 chicken breasts.

Here is your shopping list:

  • Meat – 4 boneless skinless chicken breasts
  • Condiments – ¼ cup Dijon mustard, ¼ cup honey
  • Oil – 1 Tablespoon olive oil
  • Spices – 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • Flavoring – ¼ teaspoon Worcestershire sauce, dash of Tabasco sauce
  • Seasoning – ¼ teaspoon salt, ¼ teaspoon pepper

Substitutions

  • Chicken thighs or any other type of chicken can be used instead of the boneless, skinless chicken breasts.
  • You can use yellow mustard or grain mustard instead of Dijon if that’s what you have on hand.
  • For a different flavor, other spices, such as rosemary or oregano will work instead of thyme.

How to make baked honey mustard chicken breasts

1 | Prep Work

Begin by preheating your oven to 375°F to ensure it’s at the right temperature when you’re ready to bake the chicken. This is important for cooking the chicken evenly.

Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil or parchment paper for easier cleanup, and if you like, place a wire rack on top. The rack will allow air to circulate around the chicken, cooking it more evenly and helping the bottom to not get soggy.

Place the chicken breasts on the prepared baking sheet.

If your chicken breasts are very thick, consider pounding them to an even thickness using a meat mallet or rolling pin. This will help them cook more evenly.

2 | Make the honey mustard sauce

In a mixing bowl, combine 1 Tablespoon olive oil, ¼ cup Dijon mustard, ¼ cup honey, 1 teaspoon dried thyme, ¼ teaspoon salt, ¼ teaspoon pepper, ¼ teaspoon Worcestershire sauce, and a dash of Tabasco sauce.

Whisk these ingredients together until you have a smooth sauce.

3 | Coat the chicken

Pour the honey mustard sauce over the chicken breasts, making sure that they are evenly coated.

You can use a pastry brush to spread the sauce over the chicken if pouring doesn’t distribute it as you’d like.

4 | Bake

Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake the chicken for about 30 minutes.

The exact time can vary depending on the size and thickness of the chicken breasts.

To check if the chicken is done, make a cut in the middle of the biggest chicken breast. Ensure that it isn’t pink inside. Or if you can use a meat thermometer. It should read 165°F when inserted into the thickest part of the breast.

Once the chicken is fully cooked, remove it from the oven.

Let it rest for a few minutes before serving. Resting allows the juices to redistribute throughout the meat, ensuring your chicken will be moist and delicious.

Serving suggestions

Garnish the baked chicken breasts with a sprinkle of fresh chopped parsley or chives for a pop of color.

Serve alongside a fluffy bed of rice pilaf, broccoli with tomatoes, and a crisp green salad.

Storage

To store, allow the baked chicken breasts to cool to room temperature. Then transfer them to an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 3 or 4 days.

For longer storage, wrap each breast individually in foil or freezer-safe wrap and freeze for up to 3 months. Thawing using the defrost setting on your microwave or in the refrigerator overnight before reheating.

How to make ahead of time

Prepare the honey and mustard sauce in advance and store it in the refrigerator for up to a week.

When ready to cook, coat the chicken breasts with the sauce and bake as directed.

Or marinate the chicken in the sauce overnight, then bake the following day for enhanced flavor.
