Ahh, the alcove. Webster defines it as “a small recessed section of a room” or “an arched opening (as in a wall).” Tidy and neat—but what Webster forgot is a nagging reality for many homeowners: “design dilemma.”

Below are three ideas for the next time you cast a critical eye on your built-in nook.

Quick Fix

The easiest way to spruce up an alcove is to use accessories. All you need is a few minutes to arrange (and rearrange!) pieces to add instant purpose to the space.

Adding accessories also helps guide the eye in an otherwise undefined area. By layering relatively small pieces, a narrower focus is created.

It’s best to keep a sense of balance within your arrangement; try countering pillar candles with a richly colored clock or vase. Your goal here is balance—not symmetry.

The benefit of this technique is twofold: it’s quick, and it’s very easily changed, depending on mood or season.

An Evening’s Work

Canvas prints can make a modern statement, and they’re surprisingly easy to make.

First, measure your space to reference when shopping for frames. You’ll need either a pre-made, blank canvas (found at most crafts stores) or wood to make the frame yourself.

Next, find your fabric. The options are endless; use fabric bought by the yard or even a set of bed sheets that strikes your fancy. Be creative!

Finally, fold the fabric over one side of the frame, turn it over, and staple using a staple gun. Stretch the fabric so it’s taut; wrap it around the frame on the opposite edge, and staple. Work in the same pattern around the frame. Then, set your creation on the ledge, and be prepared for compliments!

Weekend Project

Got a spare weekend? You could try creating a frame inside your alcove.

Start by measuring 2 inches from the top and sides of the wall and 3 to 4 inches from the bottom to get the proper dimensions for your frame. Next, paint a rich color on the wall. While it dries, head to your local home improvement store for narrow molding to make your frame (resin works well—and even comes in white). You can have it cut to your specifications at the store, or do it at home.

Finally, assemble the frame on the wall using finishing nails. The result? A sophisticated, trendy look that punches up the wow factor in any space.
