Every year I love to find out what people are searching for when it comes to interior decorating. And this year’s 2020 home decor trends are no different. You just never know when you might run across some new ideas that will fit right in with your design aesthetic.
It’s almost the start of a new year (and a new decade!) and that means a lot of people are setting New Year’s resolutions and planning for the future.
It also means it’s time for Pinterest to release it’s annual trends report. This is where they look at all of the searches being performed on their platform and publish a list of the top 100 trending topics.
Of those 100 ideas, I pick out the home decor trends and give them to you here.
So these trends are not based on my opinion, or the opinions of other bloggers or interior designers, or even the research done by decorating magazines.
These are based on what all of the users on Pinterest are actually looking for…the collective interests of over 320 milliion people per month! So hopefully, there are at least a few ideas that you like 🙂

There are a few over-arching themes that seem to be dominating the home decor trends for 2020::
- Just like in the 2020 paint color trends, people are looking for more balance and calm in their lives. (Especially with an American presidential election coming up this year.) So many of these home decor trends are bringing that feeling of relaxing at home to interior decorating.
- An emphasis on conservation and the environment is showing up in home decor, with re-use and upcycling as a big trend.
- International decor styles are becoming more popular as people look for inspiration to do different things with their homes.
And now on to the list…
10. Feng Shui Decor
The first entry on our 2020 home decor trends list is Feng Shui decor. Searches for it on Pinterest are up 137%.
In case you’re not sure what Feng Shui is, it’s a traditional Chinese concept which aims to ensure that people live in harmony with their surroundings.
Now, I don’t think Feng Shui decor has really ever been “out” but it definitely fits in with the “looking for balance and calm” attitude I mentioned above.

9. Thrifted Home Decor
Next up on our 2020 interior design trends list is thrifted home decor, up 308% in Pinterest searches this year.
This includes any kind of project that turns something old into something new. This keeps things out of the landfill sites and helps to save you some money. A double win!
And just in case you’re not into the shabby chic look, it is possible create thrifted home decor that doesn’t really look thrifted.
Like upgrading an old, ugly bar cabinet with black lacquer and gold leaf.
Or creating an elegant reading nook out of an old settee, two ugly bedside tables and a plain shelving unit…like I did for my master bedroom makeover.
8. Spanish Style Bathrooms
Spanish style bathrooms are #8 on our home decor trends list. Searches for them are up 309% on Pinterest.
Characterized by Mediterranean and ocean colors, patterned tile and wood accents, this is the first of the International influences on our list.
And with their refreshing color palette, I can see why people like them. You know I love that blue and white!
7. Home Theater Design
Home theater design is the next most popular search term on Pinterest, up 368%.
While they had fallen out of style for a few years, it seems like people have started to gain back their interest in having a home theater in their house.
Whether you decide to upgrade your living room to include a comfortable TV watching spot, or go for a whole room dedicated to the theater experience, it’s a perfect way to watch a movie or your favorite sports team while relaxing in your own home.
If you’re more interested in listening to music than watching TV, you might want to consider an Audio Room…searches for them are up 803%
6. French Antiques
The next international influence on our list is French antiques. Searches for them are up 384% on Pinterest.
In my opinion, antiques never go out of style, but people seem to be taking a special interest in the French ones these days.
I can’t really blame them. With the gorgeous chandeliers and elaborate ceiling decor, a lot of the antique French decor is right up my alley.
Of course, I suspect many of the people doing the searching are going for more of a French country look which works well with the current farmhouse trend. But since that’s not really my style, I’m sticking with the glam side of French antiques.
5. Japanese Soaking Tubs
Number 5 on our list falls into both the international influence and the relaxing trends. Which may be why searches for Japanese soaking tubs are up 563%.
These tubs are deep enough to totally immerse yourself in and usually have a bench for comfortable seating.
Many also come with stairs on the outside so you don’t have to climb over the top. Talk about total relaxation!
4. Home Coffee Stations
Having a good cup of coffee is many people’s idea of a great way to start the day.
So it’s probably not surprising that creating a home coffee bar that feels like a cozy coffee shop is trending these days.
Even if it means painting a wall in chalkboard paint so you can write on it above your coffee maker 🙂
Searches for home coffee stations are up 751%.
3. Indoor Water Fountains
There is nothing like the sound of gurgling water to make a garden feel relaxing.
And many people want to bring that same tranquility into their homes, which is why searches for indoor water fountains are up 917%. And makes it the #3 item in the 2020 interior decorating trends.
There are many inexpensive options available these days, so it’s an easy thing to do to add that zen feeling to any room.
2. Indian Living Rooms
We’re getting to the top of the list, with searches for Indian living rooms up 2080%!
Depending on who you talk to, this could mean neutrals with pops of color, modern mixed with traditional Indian decor or brightly-colored Moroccan-inspired interiors.
Since India is a large country that has many areas and cultures, I actually think it would be pretty hard to come up with one style that defines the whole country. However, if you’re looking for that international flair, India certainly has lots of inspiration to draw on.
1. Thrift Store Crafts
And now on to the number one home decor trend for 2020…Thrift store crafts. Searches for it are up a whopping 2276%
These projects are usually a little easier to take on than some of the whole-scale furniture re-do’s but can still make a big impact on your home decor without costing a lot of money.
