2020 home decor trends

It’s almost the start of a new year (and a new decade!) and that means a lot of people are setting New Year’s resolutions and planning for the future.

It also means it’s time for Pinterest to release it’s annual trends report. This is where they look at all of the searches being performed on their platform and publish a list of the top 100 trending topics.

Of those 100 ideas, I pick out the home decor trends and give them to you here.

So these trends are not based on my opinion, or the opinions of other bloggers or interior designers, or even the research done by decorating magazines.

These are based on what all of the users on Pinterest are actually looking for…the collective interests of over 320 milliion people per month! So hopefully, there are at least a few ideas that you like 🙂

There are a few over-arching themes that seem to be dominating the home decor trends for 2020::

  1. Just like in the 2020 paint color trends, people are looking for more balance and calm in their lives. (Especially with an American presidential election coming up this year.) So many of these home decor trends are bringing that feeling of relaxing at home to interior decorating.
  2. An emphasis on conservation and the environment is showing up in home decor, with re-use and upcycling as a big trend.
  3. International decor styles are becoming more popular as people look for inspiration to do different things with their homes.

And now on to the list…

In case you’re not sure what Feng Shui is, it’s a traditional Chinese concept which aims to ensure that people live in harmony with their surroundings.

Now, I don’t think Feng Shui decor has really ever been “out” but it definitely fits in with the “looking for balance and calm” attitude I mentioned above.

I can’t really blame them. With the gorgeous chandeliers and elaborate ceiling decor, a lot of the antique French decor is right up my alley.

Of course, I suspect many of the people doing the searching are going for more of a French country look which works well with the current farmhouse trend. But since that’s not really my style, I’m sticking with the glam side of French antiques.

5. Japanese Soaking Tubs

Even if it means painting a wall in chalkboard paint so you can write on it above your coffee maker 🙂

Searches for home coffee stations are up 751%.

Depending on who you talk to, this could mean neutrals with pops of color, modern mixed with traditional Indian decor or brightly-colored Moroccan-inspired interiors.

Since India is a large country that has many areas and cultures, I actually think it would be pretty hard to come up with one style that defines the whole country. However, if you’re looking for that international flair, India certainly has lots of inspiration to draw on.

Having just downsized to an apartment we are limited to the extent of our decorating. I’ve found using the peel and stick wall paper to be a great way to add interest and color to some of the walls. However, my favorite trend from your blog is the interior water feature! So versatile!
It is definitely my next addition.

    1. Wanda Simone says:

I love interior water features, too, Nadine! They look and sound so relaxing…and they’re much easier to keep up with than the outdoor versions 🙂

  2. With so many Decor trends out there, I love these you have highlighted. They are easy to implement.

  3. I especially love the trend of treasure hunting in Thrift Stores, Antique Malls, Garage sales, etc. fir items to redo to make your home UNIQUE!
