The Most Popular Home Decor Trends of 2018 (according to Pinterest)

Looking for decorating inspiration for your house? Find the most popular 2018 home decor trends that will help you redecorate your home in style.

Most Popular Home Decor Trends of 2018

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote about the paint color trends for 2018, and now I’m moving on to the 2018 Home Decor Trends.

As usual, my go-to source when I’m looking for decorating inspiration is Pinterest.

When it comes to trends, they make it even easier than normal! They actually create a board with a list of trends based on the increase of search volumes on their site.

I love to see what’s on their list…because these trends are based on what average people are searching for, not what some company who is trying to sell furniture says they should be.

So read on to find out the most popular 2018 home decor trends according to Pinterest.

Statement Doors

The Most Popular Home Decor Trends of 2018

As I mentioned in my paint color post, painting your door in a statement color is a big home decor trend for 2018. It not only helps to brighten up your entry way, it also makes sure that everyone knows where the door is.

My mother has embraced the statement door (to go with her statement house color) for as long as I can remember.

If you need some more inspiration, camillestyles.com has some great door color ideas.

The Fifth Wall

I can’t believe this is finally trending!! Decorating the ceiling is going mainstream.

If you’ve seen any of our room makeovers, you know that we don’t do plain white ceilings (like this plaid ceiling in my mother’s house).

It looks like a lot of other people are trying this out, too! Apparently, searches for “statement ceilings” are up 310% on Pinterest.

For more inspiration, try out our list of ways to decorate the ceiling (the fifth wall!).

Mixed Metals

Using mixed metals in home decor is another 2018 trend that makes me happy!

Not only do I love using metals when I’m decorating, but I have always loved to mix them (breaking some people’s design rules).

Gold and silver mixed

The people have spoken! Mixed metals are okay.

Searches for this decorating idea are up 423% on Pinterest.

Spa Bathrooms

My spa bathroom

Having just renovated my master bathroom this year, I totally get this 2018 home decor trend…and I think it will be here for a while.

Between all of the long hours at work and the turmoil in the world, everyone needs a relaxing place to wind down.

And a spa bathroom is the perfect way to do this!

Herringbone and Chevron Patterns

If you want to add some interest to your floor or wall, a herringbone pattern may be just the thing.

It’s not too complicated to pull off, and really adds dimension to the space.

Even when there’s nothing else in the room, it really makes a statement!

Big Wall Art

Okay, I think this trend should really be a “design rule” (I even included it in my ways to make your home look more expensive).

Large wall art adds so much more impact to a room than small pictures. Plus you only have to hang one frame…which means a lot fewer holes in the wall! Especially if you’re like me and can never get the nail in the right place the first time 🙂

Of course if you don’t want to spend too much money, you could always do a DIY version like the Chinoiserie wall I painted in my hallway.

Other people must like this idea, too…searches for big wall art on Pinterest were up 637%.

Bone Inlay

I have to admit I am a little surprised at this trend. I happen to love bone inlay, but I always thought it was a pretty specific design taste.

However, it looks like it’s going a little more mainstream.

This lamp from West Elm is combining 3 of this year’s trends – metals, chevron pattern and bone inlay! I just may have to find a spot for this.

Terrazzo

This is another somewhat surprising 2018 home decor trend for me…maybe people are starting to get away from the Farmhouse decor that has been all the rage for the last few years.

Terrazzo is another great way to add some texture, color and dimension to your space.

I have been coveting this cement countertop made with recycled blue glass for a long time! Maybe it’s time for a kitchen upgrade 🙂

Well that’s it for the Pinterest home decor trends of 2018. Hopefully you’ve found some inspiration to get decorating.

Pin it so you don’t forget it!

  1. Can the outside of the front door be painted a different color than the inside of a front door and it still be considered trendy? I am considering changing the exterior color of my front door to red but leaving the interior view of it white. What do you think?

    1. Wanda Simone says:

Hi Dee…yes, painting the outside of the door a different color than the inside is totally fine. Red is a great exterior door color…but there aren’t a lot of people who have decor to match that in their house 🙂

  2. I like a lot of these but herringbone will be short lived as it’s been popular for awhile now. I have way too many family pictures to go with Big art. Unfortunately as well I don’t have a large home for most of these and I do so Love the bathroom❤️

    1. Thanks, Veronica! I agree herringbone has been around for a while and may be at the end of its popularity run. I think your big group of family photos has the same effect as large art 🙂

  3. Jackie Bluejacket says:

    How about some backsplash help?

  4. I love the giant wall art trend and the mixed metals but not a fan of chevron at all. I know I’m in the minority there but thankfully there’s lot and lots of different trends to pick and choose from. Keep those great posts coming they are much appreciated.
    Cheers
    Marie

    1. Thanks, Marie! I’m a big fan of big art and mixed metals, too! You’re right about trends…there’s so many out there you can pick the ones you like and leave the rest 🙂

  5. pretty and genius.I admire the coherence of colours and the simplicity as well.Good work Wanda.

  6. Not a fan of any of these new trends. Too gaudy for my small home

    1. Hi Suzy…The trends this year are pretty bold so they are definitely not everyone’s taste. Good thing you don’t have to follow them if you don’t want to 🙂

  7. Hi
Just to clarify…the West Elm lamp is chevron not herringbone…lots of people get these confused.

    1. Thanks for pointing that out, Sheila! I corrected the description 🙂

  8. LOVE IT
I have been waiting for my HOA to approve a navy blue garage door and home door….and waiting, and waiting…in beige land.
    Sigh

    1. Hi Patricia…I feel your pain! I would love to have a blue door…but that’s a no-go with my HOA so brown or black it is 🙁 Hopefully you will have better luck!

    1. Thanks, Ivory! I’m loving a lot of the trends this year, too 🙂
