1 | Traditional white kitchen with a black countertop
Traditional kitchen photo by J Rider Construction (via houzz.com) One of the easiest ways to create a black and white color scheme for your kitchen is to put black countertops on white cabinets.
Then add some other black accents, such as stools, the range hood, pendant lights, handles and trim to make the room look cohesive.
You’ll end up with a bright and airy room that also has some drama.
2 | Modern white kitchen with black countertops
Modern kitchen photo by Adapt Interior Design (via houzz.com) This color scheme also works well for modern kitchens.
Because they tend to have fewer architectural details, you may want to bring more black into the room by opting for black appliances.
If you want to mix things up a bit, use a white countertop on the island and make it stand out by pulling up striking black chairs.
3 | Cream cabinets with black countertops
Transitional kitchen photo by Southern Supply (via houzz.com) For a less dramatic but still stunning look, use a warmer white or cream for the cabinets under a black countertop.
Then carry the black over to the island cabinets and top it with a warm-toned granite countertop.
Putting up a similar color tile on the backsplash makes sure the entire room feels warm and welcoming.
4 | Black cabinets with a white countertop
Or if you prefer a darker, modern look, do the opposite. Use white countertops on black cabinets.
The light color helps to open up the space and adds contrast with the darkness of the cabinets.
If you want to tone down the contrast a little, look for marble or granite countertops that have some black in them. Which will bring some of the cabinet color into the surface.
5 | Black island white cabinets
Transitional kitchen photo by Victoria Highfill (via houzz.com) Another option is to use mostly white cabinets and countertops. Then use black as an accent color.
This kitchen has an island with black cabinets, tall black cabinets on the refrigerator wall, a black range hood and black trim around the upper cabinet glass doors.
Which is enough to make a statement but not overwhelm the room.
Because the black is spread throughout the kitchen, it leads your eye into the room and makes you notice all of the details.
6 | Black and white farmhouse kitchen
Farmhouse kitchen photo by Tradewinds General Contracting, Inc. (via houzz.com) Black and white isn’t just for modern or traditional kitchens. It also goes very well in a farmhouse kitchen like this one.
This kitchen uses black base cabinets, with warm white countertops and walls. Then adds more black accents with the range hood and room trim.
The open wood shelving adds warmth to the room, as does the plank wood floors and some of the other rustic room details.
7 | Black white and wood kitchen
Traditional kitchen photo by Renaissance GSB (via houzz.com) Plain black and white can sometimes feel a little cold. So adding some warmth to it is a good idea.
One way to do this is with wood.
While you can do this with wood floors and shelves (like the farmhouse kitchen above), this kitchen mixes wood cabinets in with the black ones.
And in this case, the style and detail of the cabinets gives the kitchen an updated traditional (or transitional) look.
8 | Black and wood countertops

They create an interesting contrast between cool and warm, add a natural element to the kitchen and look beautiful with either white or black cabinets.
9 | Black, white and gold kitchen
Transitional kitchen photo by Haven Design and Construction (via houzz.com) For those who like a little glam in their decor, adding gold to your black and white kitchen is a great idea.
It adds warmth and shine to the design. And stands out really well against the black.
Light fixtures, cabinet knobs and handles, trim on the range hood, stools and faucets are all good places to consider using the metal.
10 | Colorful flooring
Transitional kitchen photo by Terri Sears, Kitchen and Bath Designer (via houzz.com) If you want more color in your kitchen, floors are a great way to add it.
I love the blue and white floors in this black and white kitchen.
The black cabinets really make the color pop and the pattern adds a lot of interest to the room.
11 | Two-toned doors
Or you can add color to the cabinets themselves.
My kitchen is quite small and doesn’t have any windows, so it felt very dark with all of the black cabinetry.
I decided to paint the middle section of each door blue which broke up the wall of black. And paired well with my blue countertops.
Then added a white backsplash to make sure light was reflected back into the room.
12 | Colorful accessories

These fuchsia and gold bar chairs really stand out against the black island in this kitchen.
Especially with the white waterfall countertop that acts like a frame around them.
13 | All black kitchen with white backsplash

The floor to ceiling windows add lots of light which keeps the room from feeling cramped.
And the wood floors and stools add some softness and warmth to the space.
14 | Color-block black and white kitchen
For something a little different, try this color-block design.
Everything down the middle of the kitchen is black, including the cabinets, light fixtures and stools.
And everything on the side is white.
To keep it from feeling to disjointed, the same white countertop is used everywhere. And they added a little black trim line to the top and bottom of the white cabinets.
15 | Interesting black and white backsplash
This kitchen has lower cabinets in high gloss black, and upper cabinets in high gloss white with black trim on the top.
Both are showstoppers in their own right.
But the finishing touch that ties them both together is the beautiful black and white backsplash.
Its unique design creates interest that draws you into the room to take a closer look.
16 | Black and white kitchen with stainless appliances
If you are a fan of stainless steel appliances, you can make them blend in with a black and white kitchen by putting up a grey backsplash.
All of the stainless steel in this kitchen helps to bounce light around, keeping it from looking too dark.
And the backsplash in grey and white glass tiles ties the whole room together.

Using the same white countertops everywhere ensures the space feels cohesive.
And the gold handles, faucets and trim add warmth and a touch of glam.
18 | White kitchen with a black island
You can also just use black as the color for the island.
It still provides a bit of drama and contrast without overwhelming the space.
Adding a couple of other black accents, such as the lighting and stools around the island help to make it look cohesive.
