Luxurious Bedroom Ideas: How To Get The Luxury Hotel Look At Home

These luxurious bedroom ideas will help you recreate that luxury hotel look at home. You’ll never want to get out of bed again!

While doing my recent master bedroom makeover, I used the luxurious bedroom ideas I saw at high-end hotels to create a relaxing retreat at home.  Even if you are decorating a small bedroom or are on a budget, many of these ideas will work for you, too.

If you’re like me, you love a beautiful hotel room.

Besides the fact that someone is making the bed for you, luxury hotel rooms make you feel like you never want to leave. Everything about them says rest and relaxation and feels totally luxurious.

So when I was doing my master bedroom makeover in the spring, I made a list of all the things I love about luxury hotel rooms. And I tried to incorporate as many of them as possible into my own room.

I was surprised to find that many of these ideas don’t have to cost a lot of money…luxury on a budget!

Here’s my list luxurious bedroom ideas to get that high end hotel look at home.

Start With Luxurious Sheets

The first idea on the luxurious bedroom ideas list is to buy luxurious sheets. While this is more of a “feel” thing than a “look”, if you’re only going to do one thing to upgrade your bedroom, I think this should be it.

Every time you get into bed, those sheets make you feel like you are being wrapped in luxury.

For me, luxury sheets are made from 100% Pima cotton with at least a 400 thread count. They cost a little more than your average sheets, but they are so worth it!

Hotels like to use white sheets (they are the easiest to clean). You could go with crisp white at home, too…but a color that matches your decor also works well.

Add A Down-Filled Duvet

Down duvets feel light and airy when they’re covering you but still keep you warm in the winter and not too hot in the summer.

They just feel so cozy, you’ll never want to get out of bed!

And A Down Filled Mattress Pad

If you really want to go all out, getting a down-filled mattress pad (that fits over the top of your regular mattress) will make you feel like you’re sleeping on air.

I have only experienced this in a couple of hotels, but it definitely felt like I was in heaven sleeping in those beds!

Layer Your Bedding

You’ll notice that most hotels give you at least 3 layers of bedding. The sheets, a blanket and a duvet.

Those bedding layers let you adjust how warm you are in bed by adding or removing layers.

It also helps to make the bed look beautiful when it’s made!

Dress the Bed

Speaking of making the bed look beautiful, you’ll find that most luxury hotels do what they call dressing the bed. Which basically means turning down the top of the sheet so that it folds over the top of the duvet.

It shows off the layers of bedding and makes the bed look more interesting…as well as making it easier to pull the sheets back when you’re ready to go to bed.

Use A Rug Around The Bed

Now that we’ve covered the bedding, the next area of concern is where your feet land when you get out of bed.

Even if the room has hardwood or tile floors, in a luxury hotel, the floor around the bed is always covered by a rug.

The rug prevents you from being jolted awake in the morning by your feet touching a cold floor…and just feels more luxurious under foot.

Choose Nightstands With Pizzazz

The next entry on my list of luxurious bedroom ideas is to use nightstands with pizzazz.

Since the bed area is the focal point of any bedroom, the nightstands are front and center when you enter the room.

So they need to be something worth looking at.

Upgrade the Hardware

If you already have nightstands that need a little something to make them stand out more, try upgrading the hardware. It’s an inexpensive way to add some pizzazz to what you already own.

My mother updated her nightstand with some mirror and glass pulls which totally transformed it.

Hang Mirrors Behind The Nightstands

Hanging mirrors behind your nightstands is another one of the luxurious bedroom ideas that will help to upgrade your bedroom.

The mirrors add some depth to the wall, and reflect light back into the room, which helps to add a little sparkle.

Use A Headboard You Can Lean On

Hotel rooms always have headboards you can lean on if you are sitting up in bed. Partly because the rooms can be small and you may need to use the bed as a seating area while you’re watching TV. But it is absolutely one of the little things that make the room feel more luxurious.

I have experienced this effect first hand. I used to have a wrought iron canopy bed in my bedroom. Which was really pretty, but very uncomfortable to lean against.

So when I made over my bedroom, I went for an upholstered headboard, and I will never go back. Reading in bed is so much more comfortable! And since I rarely have time to sit down and read, this is a luxury I really appreciate!

Paint Or Wallpaper The Walls

For those of you who have been around here for a while, you know I’m not a big fan of white walls anywhere in my house. So it probably wasn’t much of a surprise that I didn’t paint my bedroom walls white, either.

However, you’ll notice that high end hotels don’t paint their bedroom walls white, either. It’s tricky to make a white room look inviting and warm, so they go for other relaxing colors (often grays, greens and blues) that will help guests to sleep better.

Use A Symmetrical Arrangement

You will also notice that luxury hotels use symmetrical arrangements around the bed. The nightstand and lamp arrangement on one side of the bed is always the same as the other side.

That’s because symmetry is calming, so if you want to feel relaxed while you’re in your bedroom, a symmetrical arrangement is the way to go.

Declutter Your Nightstand

While we’re talking about nightstands, another way to increase the luxury feel in your room is to get rid of the clutter.

The tube of lip balm, cell phone charger and dog-eared paperback lying around on your bedside table are not helping with the luxury feel.

A nightstand with a drawer is a great way to hide some of the necessary items that don’t look great. Or try adding a pretty accessory box or basket to help corral the clutter.

Ditch The Blinds

Another feature of hotel rooms that helps to add the feeling of luxury is using drapes instead of blinds. All of that fabric makes the room feel softer and more luxurious.

Hotel rooms usually have at least 2 rows of curtains, and sometimes 3:

  • a blackout curtain whose sole purpose is to make the room dark,
  • and a curtain which may or may not close, but looks beautiful
  • many hotel rooms also have sheers which give the window some privacy without blocking all the light.

While you may not want to add all of these to your won windows, hanging drapes with a blackout lining is an easy way to get the same feeling.

Hang Artwork With Impact

The next one of my luxurious bedroom ideas is to hang large artwork that creates an impact.

Luxury hotels hang large pieces of art on their walls to add some character to the room.

You can do the same…especially over the head board where there is often some empty wall space that is perfect for a large piece of art.

Incorporate a Sitting Area

All luxury hotel rooms have a sitting area, which usually consists of at least one really comfortable lounge chair that makes you want to sit and put your feet up.

Even if your room isn’t large enough for a big chair, a bench at the end of the bed will provide the same kind of feeling. And give you a place to put the extra pillows and cushions while you’re sleeping.

Hang a Chandelier

To me, nothing says luxury like a sparkling chandelier. Which is why I have one in almost every room in my house…including the bedroom.

Whether you go for a chandelier or some other kind of light fixture you love, getting rid of the builder grade ceiling light fixture is a must if you want to upgrade your bedroom.

You won’t see the “boob” light in a luxury hotel room!

Upgrade Lampshades

Another simple way to upgrade your bedroom without spending a ton of money is to replace the lampshades on your table lamps.

You’ll notice a lot of high end hotels use extra tall lampshades beside the bed. It provides a little extra height and drama, especially if there’s a large headboard.

Add Layers of Lighting

You’ll notice layers of lighting in pretty much all hotel rooms. They have the overhead lights that turn on at the door, the floor lamps placed in the corners, and table lamps on the nightstands and desk.

This room even has a second set of lights on the bed that are strictly for reading…so you can stay up with your book and not disturb your partner who wants to sleep.

All of these options let you provide as much or as little lighting as you want.
