how to decorate a white Christmas tree with black decorations

Black and white is one of my favorite color schemes. So I decided to do all of my Christmas decorations using that theme.

For this tree I decorated a white Christmas tree with black ornaments and it is stunning!

It uses a mix of black and white ribbons, charming black ornaments, some DIY black and white creations and a little bit of gold to create a glamorous, modern black and white Christmas tree.

We’ve even got the scoop on where to find the most eye-catching black ornaments.

Read on to get the step-by-step tutorial on how to put it together.

Supplies

These are the number and types of ornaments that I used on my 7-foot Christmas tree. You can use more or less depending on the size of your tree, and how many ornaments you like on it.

Materials

  • white leopard tree skirt
  • 30 to 40 large black or black and white ornaments of different sizes
  • 20 small black or black and white ornaments
  • 12 to 18 long black and white finial ornaments
  • DIY black and white polka dot ornaments
  • DIY gold heart ornaments
  • DIY letter ornaments
  • 24 small black bows
  • 3 yards 4-inch black velvet ribbon
  • 3 yards 2.5-inch white velvet ribbon – I layered two ribbons together to make a striped version, but if you can find a single ribbon you like, you can eliminate this one.

How to decorate a white christmas tree with black decorations

Step 1 | Put down the tree skirt

Begin your tree decorations by laying down the tree skirt.

You’ll find it much simpler to position without any ornaments obstructing your way.

I used a white leopard faux fur one that I love. But any black and white one will work.

Step 2 | Hang ball ornaments

Start decorating the tree by hanging black and white ball ornaments on the tree.

Putting the bigger decorations on first makes it easier to find the perfect spots for them.

Fill in any gaps with the smaller ones.

Ensure you spread these ornaments evenly around the tree to create a balanced, aesthetically pleasing look.

I also made these black and white polka ornaments to go with the theme.

Step 3 | Put up long finial ornaments

For a striking contrast with the round ornaments, hang up some long finial ornaments.

These will give a vertical element to your tree, making it more visually interesting.

Step 5 | Hang specialty ornaments

I always like to add some specialty ornaments that aren’t the usual ball shape.

And they usually have some metallic or crystal accents to add some shine.

For this tree, I also made a couple of DIY ornaments.

These black and white striped ornaments with a gold heart in the middle are super easy to make.

And go with the color scheme perfectly.

Then I added large DIY black and white letter ornaments that spell “NOEL” and “JOY”.

But they are customizable so you can use whatever sayings you want (or even do monograms if you prefer).

I also used the black and white letters to create the banner that I hung behind the tree.

Step 6 | Tie on black bows

To add a softer texture to your tree, simply attach small black bows to the ends of a few branches.

This will not only enhance the visual appeal but also create a striking contrast with the white Christmas tree.

Step 7 | Layer the ribbons

I think wide ribbons look best on Chistmas trees but I can never seem to find the design that I want. So I often combine 2 ribbons to create a custom look.

In this case, I was looking for a striped ribbon effect.

To make it, place the narrower white velvet ribbon down the center of the wider black one. Then secure them together by stapling every 6 inches.

This will create a beautiful contrast that enhances the white Christmas tree with black decorations.

If you can find a black and white ribbon you like that is at least 4 inches wide, feel free to use it and skip this step.

Step 8 | Add a tree topper bow

For the finishing, create a large bow using the wide ribbon we just put together.

Leave long tails on the bow so they can elegantly cascade down the sides of the tree.

This will serve as your tree topper, adding a festive flair to your holiday décor.

If you’re not good at creating bows free-hand, a Bow-dabra machine can help.

Frequently asked questions

Are there specific black ornaments you recommend for my white Christmas tree?

It really depends on your personal style. But I like to use a mix of shiny and matte ones to add different textures to the tree.

How can I incorporate more gold accents without overpowering the black and white theme?

Gold accents can be added subtly through smaller ornaments or ribbons. To make sure they play a supporting role, use fewer of them than the black and white ornaments. Then they will add a touch of glamour without taking away from the black and white theme.
