black and white Christmas decor ideas

Black and white is one of my favorite color schemes.

But I have never used it (without any other colors) for Christmas decor.

Partly because I wasn’t sure how Christmas-y it would look.

And partly because most of the black and white Christmas trees I have seen are done in farmhouse style. Which is very pretty. But isn’t my taste.

This year, I decided to take a chance and decorate my living room in black and white (with a glam twist) for Christmas.

And I’m happy to say that I love the way it turned out! It’s elegant and modern but still feels cozy and warm.

So here are all of the black and white Christmas decor ideas I used to make it happen.

Put up black and white Christmas trees

The most obvious black and white decorations are the ornaments that you hang on your Christmas tree. (Or trees, in my case.)

I went one step further and used trees that are either black or white (as you can see more closely in the pictures below). I find they emphasize the color scheme even more.

Adding all kinds of black and white decorations, like ribbons, deco mesh, garlands, ball ornaments, long ornaments, flowers and bows, help to create interest and texture.

And that texture is what keeps the color scheme from feeling too cold.

Mixing in some metallic and crystal accents create a little sparkle that adds some Christmas magic.

Especially when the tree lights are turned on.

You can see the details of all my black and white Christmas trees:

update the room decor

One trick I use often is to match the Christmas decorations to the room’s color scheme. (It always looks stunning!)

Since my living room isn’t normally black and white, this year I went the other way round.

And made a couple of quick decor updates to make the room match my Christmas decorations.

First by switching out the curtains for some black and white striped ones.

And then by covering the back of bookshelves with black and white fabric.

Wrap presents with coordinating paper

Once you’ve got the trees up, it’s time to wrap some presents.

Getting wrapping paper and ribbon in coordinating colors helps to reinforce the theme.

I like to get 3 or 4 different kinds of paper and ribbon so I can mix and match.

But if you like simplicity, you can wrap all the presents in plain white paper and tie black bows around them (or the other way around – black paper with white bows).

I use some of the same ribbon that I used on the trees so that the pattern is carried down from the tree onto the ground.

Put up a garland

This year I went with a really simple garland that goes with the black and white theme.

The garland itself is white.

Then I tied in black and white plaid deco mesh, along with a wide black velvet ribbon and a slightly narrower white ribbon edged in gold with music notes on it.

The whole thing took me about 5 minutes to make but it looks stunning on the fireplace mantel.

Hang black and white stockings

Speaking of the fireplace mantel, I couldn’t forget the stockings.

I found an inexpensive set on Amazon which came in a variety of black, white and silver patterns.

Which look really pretty with the garland.

And the Christmas trees.

Get striped candles

I have some candle holders that hang above the mantel on either side of my mirror TV.

It’s the perfect place to put black and white striped candles. Along with one of my mini Christmas trees (in white, of course).

Make black and white swags

I always have at least one DIY Christmas decor project.

And these Christmas swags were one of this year’s projects.

Made with faux evergreens, a few ornaments and a ribbon, they’re really easy and inexpensive to put together.

It was the perfect place to use some of my DIY black and white polka dot ornaments, since they coordinate so well with the black and white striped ribbon.

Use holiday cushion covers

These black and white cushion covers add a little Christmas spirit to the sofa.

I keep a set of 18″ x 18″ cushions that I use specifically for holiday decorating.

Then I buy covers to put on them for each season.

It’s much less expensive to do it this way than to buy new cushions every time you want to update them.

And you only have to store the covers so they don’t take up much space.

Add black and white accessories

To carry on the color theme in other parts of the room, try adding a few black and white accessories on shelves and/or table tops.

I love penguins, so these were the perfect addition.

But you can also find black and white mini trees, signs or other holiday accessories. (MacKenzie Childs has a whole line of black and white decor that would be perfect if you like her style).

Use lots of mini trees

To create a divider behind the sofa, I filled the console table with all kinds of mini trees.

I used all shapes and sizes, mostly white and clear ones with a few gold and a couple of blacks.

They almost look like a magical forest. And they really sparkle when the tree lights are on.

Well that’s the tour of my black and white Christmas living room decor. I hope you’ve found some inspiration for your own holiday decorations.

  3. So many wonderful ideas! This is our “off” year for inside Christmas decorating, (it takes us about a month to decorate the entire downstairs) because we won’t be available. But next year!!! Watch out! I too have themed trees and one of them is black, white, and silver. Can’t wait to incorporate some of your ideas for next year! Thank you so much!
