Read on for tips on how to recreate gray and purple bedroom makeover in your own home.

Although I don’t want to admit it, I haven’t been sleeping well this winter and I was forced to think about why?
What about my bedroom was irritating me? What was uncomfortable enough to keep me awake?

After reading about room color psychology, I realized it was all the burgundy I have in the room.
It’s too close to red which is an energizing, not a relaxing color.
So keeping that in mind, I set about trying to achieve a more relaxing atmosphere.
And decided to keep the gray and lavender, but replace the burgundy with more purple (my favorite color).

1 | Change out the bedding

The first step was to change out the bedding.
To replace the duvet, I purchased a light-weight quilt in ivory with a gray chevron pattern down the middle.
Then ordered purple sheets that add a bit more color to the bed and tie into the color of the headboard.

The quilt is long enough to reach the floor and cover the bed pillows. So I didn’t need to add a bed skirt.
But I did drape a purple mohair throw over the foot of the bed for extra warmth on those chilly winter nights.
2 | Paint the walls gray purple

I like the lavender and gray wallpaper accent wall behind the bed. So I decided to keep it.
But the rest of the walls were painted teal to match some of the flowers on the old duvet.
Since it didn’t go with my new color scheme, I needed to change the paint color.

To co-ordinate with the purple slub in the wallpaper, I chose a beautiful gray purple, called Mythical (SW 6550) from Sherwin Williams, for the walls.
While I was at it, I also painted the storage baskets on a floating shelf above the door the same Mythical color so that they would blend in with the decor.
3 | Paint a design on the ceiling

I’m also a big proponent of decorating the ceiling.
So I decided to incorporate the toile by finding a coordinating paint color for the ceiling that would address its presence.
I selected a pink, in the same tone, but much lighter than the color in the drapes and darker than the pink in the wallpaper.

That color is Audrey’s Blush (SW 9001) from Sherwin Williams.
I painted the center part of the ceiling and the surrounding molding with this color.
(If you’re wondering what the textured part is, it’s paint-able wallpaper.)

Then added a lavender and grey color block border around the edge of the ceiling that ties in with the wall color.
4 | Paint the trim dark purple

For the woodwork, I chose a darker shade on the Mythical color card called Dewberry (SW 6552).
It needed 3 coats to get complete coverage but was totally worth it.
5 | Replace The Rug

I found a darker purple and ivory rug in the right size that enhances the room decor perfectly.

It really ties the whole room together.
6 | Update The Accessories

The last step is to update the accessories.
I bought silver mirrored pillar candles to brighten the corner by the drapes.

I left the original DIY mirrored nightstand and lamp in the room.

But added to the apple collection for more of a statement.

Then brought in one of my favorite paintings from another room.
It picks up the color of the walls and the ceiling nicely. And evokes fond memories of Kauai (where I bought it).
The finished bedroom

These simple changes have made a huge impact on how well I like the room (and on healthier sleep patterns).
